Can I use an Iron for DTF Transfers?

This is one of the many questions I receive about our DTF Transfers.  It's important to understand DTF inks and how they work.  DTF Ink is made up of pigments, solvents, resins, and additives. Each property plays a role in color, consistency, adhesion to film and adhesion to fabrics.

In order to achieve lasting color and transfer adhesion, heat and pressure control are key components.

DTF transfers require a heat press temperature around 320°F to 330°F (160°C to 165°C). Many household irons do not have or generate the amount of heat needed to press or lack the ability to maintain a steady temperature. Another area of concern is most household irons cannot cover the entire transfer area leading to inconsistencies in pressure and heat temps throughout the transfer. This can cause under- or overheating in some areas.

Finally, Pressure is another key component. Heat presses distribute the proper firm pressure across the entire transfer and garment surface, which aids in proper adhesion to fabrics. A household iron relying on hand pressure may not be sufficient to properly adhere the transfer to the fabric correctly. If this happens, your print will not last long, and prints could possibly crack or fade.

When it comes to the quality of your garments you want the best possible long-lasting prints therefore Heat Press machines are the number one pick overall to press your transfer. However, this is merely my opinion. Household irons can cover an area of a pocket size transfer and could get enough pressure for that size of print.

Consider having a professional press your garments to be sure you are getting the best possible pressure and heat setting. Some businesses offer use of press machines for a per press price or hourly use.
